WHEN SCIENCE MEETS NATURE
α-Bisabolol (Alpha-Bisabolol or Levomenol), often abbreviated bisabolol, is also known as levomenol, a naturally occurring compound that is the main component of German chamomile essential oil. It can also be produced synthetically, being chemically identical to the dates found in nature. It’s one of those ingredients that’s a big hitter when it comes to skincare, yet sits quietly in the background and does its thing without drawing much attention to itself.
It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Not only that, but it can also help increase the absorption of certain ingredients. Bisabolol is rich in panthenol, a provitamin B5 that helps in healing and moisturizing the skin and hair. It has also been used in skin care preparations for centuries for its healing properties. The faint, sweet floral aroma makes it a useful addition to fragrances.
Historically, people have used α-bisabolol medicinally for its anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. In cosmetics, it acts as a skin conditioner, improving the appearance of dehydrated or damaged skin by reducing dryness and flaking and restoring suppleness. Due to its high concentration of Panthenol, it can effectively stimulate and promote the skin’s healing process and promote healthy hair growth.
Its ability to enhance the penetration of other cosmetic ingredients makes it a useful adjunct to treatments that contain other active ingredients, including antioxidants, peptides and retinoids. Its skin-soothing and anti-inflammatory properties not only have a positive effect on wound healing, but also on soothing irritated skin. Because it has so many useful properties, α-bisabolol can be found in a range of products including serums, moisturizers, sunscreens, cleansers and makeup.
Because of this fact, it is a useful active ingredient in care products for sensitive skin. It is an excellent alternative to chamomile extracts, as it is less allergenic and has a more quantifiable potency.
